More and more people wear wigs as both a fashion accessory and an aid to hair loss. Men who are not good candidates for hair transplant surgery often consider a wigs as a solution to hair loss. Men’s wigs have come a long way and can look very natural. Men’s wigs can be made of synthetic hair or human hair. When buying a men’s wigs online it is important to understand the different types of wigs available. Another important aspect of buying a wigs online is fit. A wig is only as good as it fits. One size does not necessarily fit all. If a wig is uncomfortable or ill fitting, it is more likely to appear unnatural looking.
Types of Men’s Wigs Online
- Cap Wigs
Cap wigs, or standard cap wigs, are the most common variety of men’s wigs. The cap is the base of the wig onto which hair is woven or sewn. Most standard cap wigs have synthetic hairs sewn into the cap in a predefined style.
- Monofilament Cap Wigs
Monofilament cap wigs also use a cap but it incorporate a monofilament mesh which is said to be more comfortable because it breathes, and more natural because hairs are tied to the cap individually which allows the wearer to part or style the hair in many ways. Men like monofilament wigs because of their versatility and naturalness.
- Capless Wigs
Capless wigs use a lattice of lace strips as the base into which hairs are sewn or tied. Men buy capless lace wigs because they are breathable and comfortable.
- Synthetic Wigs vs Human Hair Wigs
Men’s Wigs can be made of a variety of material including acrylic, modacrylic, nylon, or polyester. Many men make the assumption that human hair wigs are better quality than synthetic wigs. This is not necessarily case. It really depends on individual need. Human hair wigs do look more natural, can be died, curled, styled, etc, like your own hair, but, they also require more maintenance. Human hair wigs for men are also generally more expensive.
- Lace Wigs
A lace wig has a mesh base cap , the mesh is coloured to match your skin so it blends and is quite undetectable. The lace wig allows for an exposed hairline so that your own hairline (if you have one) may be incorporated into the look. Full lace wigs cannot be parted so are generally limited to one style.
- Vacuum Wigs (Freedom Wigs)
A vaccum wig is a “prosthetic” silicone cap that is molded to fit the shape of your scalp. The mould is so exact that it feels like a second skin. It is close fitting so it will not shake loose or come off in the wind. The silicone is color treated to match your skin tone so it blends invisibly and is nearly undetectable.

How does a balding man or woman decide whether or not to wear a wig or have a hair transplant? The main reason a person opts to wear a wig rather than have a hair transplant is that they don’t have enough donor hair. In hair transplant surgery, a hair transplant doctor removes hair from an area at the back of the head that is not succeptible to Dehydrotestosterone, the androgen that causes hair loss. This area is known as the donor area or donor zone. Some people with thinning hair or balding don’t have enough donor supply to perform a hair transplant. The other factor, and this is sometimes more complicated, is cost. Many people wear a wig or hair system because they believe it is a cheaper alternative, but, when they consider the actual cost of regular maintenance and fitting of a good hair system, the would find that a one time hair transplant may in fact be cheaper over the long haul. If you are buying a cheap off-the-shelf wig, then indeed that solution is less expensive than a hair transplant, but you also get what you pay for. Off-the-shelf wigs do not look natural, don’t fit well, and are uncomfortable. Many men and women who choose a wig, wind up with a “hair system” because they are more natural looking, custom fitted and tailored to your head shape, but these can come at a cost of a few hundred dollars per month. Hair systems have to be glued or taped to your scalp, and they must be regularly maintained by the seller, thus the monthly fees. As of this writing, a hair transplant may cost $10,000 – $20,000, but they are permanent and are the most natural looking solution to hair loss. If you are considering a custom hair system, you may want to also consider a hair transplant, 5 years of payments on an imperfect hair system may equal the cost of one amazingly natural hair transplant.
